The fight for justice and freedom must continue

Thursday, May 29 2025

Dear friends of Refugee Legal,

In these times of great uncertainty and upheaval, you can do something to make a real difference to people’s lives.

As crises escalate globally—and reverberate deeply here—rights and lives are endangered by the day.

Right now—across the nation—many thousands of people seeking refugee protection remain in protracted limbo, subject to systemic injustices which continue to violate and endanger lives. And tear families apart.

The reality is that the very big fight for justice and freedom must continue. And the time is ripe for change.

Amidst this, we are launching our End of Financial Year Appeal.

Amongst the many needs of people seeking protection from persecution, their greatest need is the legal permission to stay—to secure safety and rebuild their lives with dignity and freedom.

We will continue to fight fearlessly for principled and humane policies that will make a direct difference in changing the course of people’s lives for the better.

In all of our work for change, we call on the government to show courage, kindness and humanity.

We’re delighted to announce a match challenge sponsorship of $75,000 from a number of our pro bono law firm partners.

This means your tax-deductible donation will be matched dollar for dollar until 30 June—and your impact doubled.

Our profound thanks to our pro bono law firm partners. We simply could not continue to do the work we do without the partnerships and collaboration of our pro bono partners. Ultimately, so much of our work is powered by these partnerships—and the will of the community for decency and justice.

Real change demands a big reform agenda and swift action. The reforms must start here:

• Expedited reassessment and a path to permanency for thousands of people refused temporary protection
• The abolition of indefinite detention
• A safety net of supports for all in need
• Enduring protection in Australia for all people held in PNG and Nauru – and those brought back here
• Real options for family to reunite here

Every day, we will be fearlessly defending the rights and lives of thousands of people who seek our help, while advocating for major reform – and justice.

Please donate now to our EOFY Appeal. Every dollar you donate will be matched up to $75,000 by our pro bono law firm partners until 30 June.

Sincerely and with thanks,

David Manne
