A message from Craig Foster AM on World Refugee Day

By the time you read this on World Refugee Day, we may or may not know the result of the Socceroos’ World Cup match against the USA. What we do know is that the team will have done Australia proud.

The Socceroos are more than a football team. They reflect modern Australia. Players from every kind of background, born not only in Australia but around the world, reminding us that diversity is one of our greatest strengths. That football is for everyone. And that Australia, at its best, is for everyone.

Many players have made remarkable journeys to be here and to pull on the green and gold.

None more so than those from refugee backgrounds – players like Nestory Irankunda, Mohamed Toure and Awer Mabil

Like all refugees, they did not choose to leave home. They did not choose displacement, uncertainty or loss. They wanted what most of us want: safety, opportunity, family and the chance to build a good life.

When Nestory Irankunda scored against Türkiye, Australians erupted in celebration, togetherness and dare I say cohesion around the country. We cheered his skill, his courage, his confidence and his determination.

But his goal also asked us a question.

How can we celebrate one brilliant, talented, fearless young man representing Australia and, at the same time, talk about refugees and people seeking asylum as though they are somehow less worthy? How can we cheer the refugee who scores for us while turning away from those many people still waiting for a fair go.

So, let’s seize this moment and embrace the remarkable contributions of refugees, who have been crucial to building a nation that is richer, more vibrant and ultimately stronger, and full of hope. Let’s continue to stand together shoulder to shoulder – all of us with a common interest.

As Awer Mabil has said ‘Australia is a multicultural country, and that’s what makes it the best country in the world.’

The truth is that every refugee arrives with hopes, talents and possibilities. Most will never play football for Australia. But all deserve the opportunity to live safely, contribute and belong.

At a time when fear, suspicion and division seem to dominate so much public debate, the Socceroos remind us of a different story. They remind us of who we are at our best – generous, confident and open to the world.

Around the globe, the number of people forced from their homes continues to soar. The scale of the challenge can feel overwhelming. But helping one person, one family, one future is never insignificant.
