I want to share with you a story about how our work in these times of great uncertainty and upheaval makes a real difference to people’s lives.

Ahmed, a Pashtun man from Pakistan, took part in several campaigns to improve the lives of women and children in his home area. This brought him to the attention of the local Taliban who threatened his life. He moved to another city but his home was bombed and several of his family members were killed.

Deeply traumatized and fearing for his life, he fled to Australia.

On arrival, he sought assistance from a private lawyer to apply for a protection visa, but his application was refused by the Department of Home Affairs.

Desperate for help and no longer able to pay for a private lawyer, he called our office.

We quickly stepped in to support his case at the Tribunal, presenting vital information missing from his original application and making legal submissions.

We also ensured that Ahmed received mental health support for his severe post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety.

With our assistance, the Tribunal recognised that Ahmed was owed protection.

Ahmed stated that the compassion, dedication, and patience of his lawyer and the team at Refugee Legal had given him “a new lease on life” and that being granted protection in Australia felt like a rebirth for him.

We continue to work fearlessly to help people like Ahmed.
