Papua New Guinea court finds Manus Island detention illegal
Tuesday, April 26 2016Papua New Guinea’s Supreme Court has ruled Australia’s detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island is illegal, as it breaches their right to personal liberty. The Supreme Court has ordered the PNG and Australian governments to take all steps possible to stop the illegal detention of 850 men still in the Manus Island detention centre. The Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Peter Dutton has released a statement saying the decision won’t alter Australia’s border policies will remain unchanged. The statement says, “People who have attempted to come illegally by boat and are now in the Manus facility will not be settled in Australia”. But Refugee Legal Executive Director, David Manne, says the ramifications will be significant for Australian asylum seeker policy.
