Refugee Legal Emergency Appeal

Friday, December 7 2018

Donations matched dollar for dollar by Peter McMullin until 25 December

Thousands of people seeking asylum in our country and on Nauru and Manus Island face a continuing emergency.

Under Federal Government policies, these vulnerable people who’ve fled from atrocities and persecution in places like Afghanistan, Myanmar, Syria and Sri Lanka have been subjected to further harm and neglect. We know of the incalculable suffering, despair and dire mental and physical health emergency this has wrought.

Many thousands of these people seeking our help in Australia under the Fast Track process exist in a state of continuing crisis. Rolling deadlines and the paralysing uncertainty they create constitutes their everyday.

Based on 30 years of experience, we know that legal assistance is vital in defending the rights of people in the face of this harm and injustice.

Their greatest need is to be granted protection – to secure safety and a chance to rebuild their lives with dignity.

To this end, we continue to provide critical legal help – and advocate for change – for the children, women and men trapped on Nauru and Manus.

Our work, together with others, is seeking to ensure people get a fair hearing, and ultimately, can resettle in safety.

We’re also working through the High Court to prevent the return of some who’ve been evacuated to Australia for urgent medical treatment, including women who have experienced sexual violence.

Onshore, we’re providing essential legal help to thousands of people to ensure they can effectively present their case under a complex and unfair process. Without it, rights and lives are endangered.

The Federal Government has completely removed all funding of our legal work. We need an urgent injection of funding to continue to help those in need – both onshore and offshore.

Peter McMullin – Australian businessman, lawyer and philanthropist – will match your generous tax-deductible donation dollar for dollar up to $50,000 up until 25 December 2018 – doubling the impact of your gift.

Help us break the cycle of harm and injustice for thousands of people in desperate need.

Please donate now to our End of Year Emergency Appeal.
