Help us fight for real change

Thursday, June 6 2024

Right now, we’re at a critical juncture in our history where we must seize the opportunity for real change.

But a big battle for justice still lies ahead.

While we’ve seen some recent progress, it doesn’t come close to meeting our fundamental obligations and the values which underpin them: humanity, compassion, fairness and justice.

The Federal Government’s recent TPV reforms are transformative for 20,000 people eligible for permanency – lifting them out of a decade of cruel limbo. But many people have been left behind. The reform is far from complete.

More than 9,000 people are still trapped in an endless cycle of uncertainty – and injustice. They’re from places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Myanmar. Most were refused protection under a fundamentally flawed process – and as it stands, they’re still not eligible for permanency. And there’s no commitment to reassess their cases.

Real change demands a big reform agenda and swift action. The reforms must start here:

  • Abolish indefinite detention
  • Establish a reassessment process for people refused temporary protection
  • Increase the Refugee and Humanitarian intake significantly
  • Resolve the situation of all people held in PNG and Nauru, and those brought back, offering enduring protection
  • Expand options for family reunion

Every day, we will be fearlessly defending the rights and lives of thousands of people who seek our help, while advocating for major reform – and justice.

Our profound thanks to the many of you who have already donated.

If you haven’t already, please consider giving to our End of Financial Year Appeal. Your tax-deductible donations will be matched by our pro bono partners up to $75,000 until 30 June – doubling the impact of your gift.

Sincerely and with thanks,
