End of Financial Year Appeal

Sunday, May 31 2020

Dear Friends,

For so many asylum seekers and refugees, COVID-19 has been another life-threatening crisis.

Amidst this, we are launching our End of Financial Year Appeal – so that we can continue to help people in desperate need.

The exclusion of people on temporary visas from the Federal Government’s multi-billion-dollar support programs has created new levels of distress and potential destitution. They’ve been left behind.

Without access to Medicare and basic income support – and suffering from visa insecurity – many are struggling to survive. The risks are even more acute for people trapped in detention.

We are all alarmed by the desperation of these people and their families.

And the Federal Government continues to process peoples’ claims for protection – deciding their fates on a daily basis.

Amongst all their needs, the greatest is to get the legal permission to stay. It’s only then that they can remain here in safety, and have access to essential supports. And a real chance to rebuild their lives.

We all recognise that terrible feeling – the need to do something to help people in these difficult times. And one of the most powerful ways to free people from the ‘legal twilight zone’ is to give them access to expert legal help.

Since the pandemic struck, we have continued to provide expert legal help – through all of our frontline services – to many people in dire need.

All of what we do is focussed on providing an enduring solution for refugees and people seeking asylum.

A gift to Refugee Legal will help secure the right for vulnerable people to thrive – a human right that will only become real when a refugee is granted the legal right to stay.

I know you have likely been called on to be generous many times during recent months. If you can support Refugee Legal now, yours will be a tax-deductible gift that keeps on giving. An enduring Solution. Please consider giving a tax-deductible gift before 30 June.

Sincerely,

David Manne
